Blast Hole Drilling

This Certificate III qualification teaches the skills and knowledge required to work as a blast hole driller in the mining and construction industries. Blast hole drillers generally work under minimal supervision and undertake a broad range of skilled applications in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.

The course includes:

  • Marking out drill patterns
  • Setting up
  • Operating and relocating drill rigs
  • Carrying out equipment maintenance and inspection activities.

The course covers:

  • A wide range of projects hard rock mining, coal mining, civil and construction works.
  • A large range of equipment and systems
  • Pneumatic and hydraulic and sensor driven systems

The elective units of competence which are applicable to this qualification are:

  • RIINHB328 Conduct rotary air drilling
  • RIIBHD301E Conduct surface blasthole drilling operations
  • RIINHB315D Conduct top-hole hammer drilling
  • RIINHB330 Conduct down-hole hammer drilling

On successful completion of the course, they will gain a RII31820 Certificate III in Drilling Operations. A Statement of Attainment will also be issued outlining the specific units of competency completed to form this qualification.

Delivery is either at the workplace or by distance learning. There is a nominal time of 12 – 18 months to complete the qualification.
